Resident Interview Process
InterviewsWe are excited that you are considering our program. Our interview process is outlined below. We know that this can be a time of stress for resident applicants. As such, our goal during this process is to have a low-stress environment where you can get to know our department and we can get to know you. Pre-interview activities start the night before with a dinner for the applicants at a local restaurant. Resident volunteers (inters through CA-3) sign up to share their knowledge of the MUSC Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine with the applicants. Please come with questions for our residents and with an appetite for excellent Charleton food! The interview day begins at roughly 8:30 a.m. in a group meeting with the Program Director (Dr. Matt McEvoy) and Program Coordinator (Mrs. Leslie Fowler). It will finish around 3:00 pm. Interviewees will have 4 interview sessions with anesthesia faculty and also take an extended tour of our campus, including our clinical sites, simulation center, and other areas of interest. A lunch is served in the middle of the day and it is attended by anesthesia residents and resident applicants. If you have a particular research interest, please advise Leslie Fowler of this and she can arrange an interview with clinical or basic science faculty that share this same interest Interviews are mandatory for anyone wanting to train at MUSC. We have a formal interview selection process. Invitations are issued after all application documents are received in ERAS. Thus, we urge early completion of all of the ERAS documents, including letters of recommendation, as we have a limited number of interview spots and we cannot offer every qualified candidate an interview. Delays in submitting your ERAS materials may put you at a disadvantage for gaining an interview spot. Interviews are offered in September and October for interview dates ranging from the end of October to January. Selection ProcessThe Department searches for applicants who have demonstrated an excellent work ethic, have diverse life experiences and interests, and also show promise in their scholarly abilities. We are seeking mature, highly motivated individuals with excellent interpersonal skills, the highest ethical standards, and the desire and ability to be leaders in the field of anesthesiology. We do not require prior research experience, but interest and demonstrated ability in a particular area relevant to anesthesiology and critical care medicine is a plus. Overall, an applicants are assessed on their educational track record, life accomplishments, evaluations and letters of recommendations, and our exposure to them during the interview process.
