More to come . . .

Exciting things are occurring in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. MUSC, founded in 1824, is the oldest medical school in the south. We are in the midst of a building boom on campus with a new replacement cardiothoracic hospital, Ashley River Tower. The department is rapidly expanding both its faculty and resident component.

        Ashley River Tower
Situated in beautiful, historic Charleston, South Carolina, MUSC is a wonderful place to train and to work. Anesthesiology residents rotate through the Medical University Hospital which consists of 21 operating suites and 10 off-site anesthesia locations: Rutledge Tower, our outpatient ambulatory surgical center with seven operating rooms, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center with five operating rooms. In addition, Ashley River Towers houses nine operating suites and several peripheral locations. Adult Cardiothoracic fellowship opportunities are available. All of our facilities offer state-of-the-art monitoring and equipment in spacious rooms.

Teaching is a priority of the department. The faculty is extremely diverse with extensive fellowship training in adult and pediatric cardiothoracic, pediatrics, critical care and pain management. Our residents come from throughout the United States. Our case load is such that residents are able to complete their case number requirements for ABA certification by the end of their CA-2 year allowing them the opportunity to concentrate on areas of interest throughout their CA-3 year.

The department is significantly engaged in research activities. As recently published in Anesthesiology, the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of acute post operative surgical pain was first performed at the Medical University of South Carolina. This exciting area of research is being expanded and potentially offers the ability to treat post operative pain without the use of narcotics. The department also has a very active Center for Cardiothoracic Translational Research laboratory where translational research between the operating rooms and the basic science lab is being performed in the realms of cardiothoracic surgery. Multiple corporate trials are ongoing at any given time. All of this research effort offers residents the opportunity to be exposed to projects with close supervision by faculty.

The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is enjoying a period of rapid expansion, along with the new technology and opportunities it brings. These things, together with all that our beautiful city has to offer, create a wonderful environment to train, work and live.
