Dr. Joshua Smith quoted in Psychology Today In a recent Psychology Today article focusing on the changing thought toward relapse for alcohol and drug addicts, Dr. Joshua Smith was quoted. Rather than viewing relapse, as merely a setback, relapse is now being viewed as an integral step in the healing process. Pleaying a key role in the development of sound strategies for conquering addiction are questions such as: What can be learned from this experience? How long can this experience change the way I approach my problme with addiction? In response to this new thought, Dr. Joshua P. Smoth, Assistant Professor and program coordinator for the outpatient substance abuse clinic at MUSC's Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs, offered this advice: “This mentality can help prevent the lapse from spiraling into a full-blown crisis…’It’s important to minimize the time spent in that slip, and the consequences of it.’…Reframing relapses as learning experiences can enhance the quitter’s confidence and resolve, giving him or her the mental energy to stick with it.” source: McGowan, K (2010, July) Addiction--When Relapse Helps You Quit.
