Dr. Gene E. Burges is a native of Charleston. She did her undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University and obtained an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical University of South Carolina. Her dissertation addressed the serologic diagnosis of systemic candidiasis. Post-graduate training included an internship in internal medicine and dermatology residency at MUSC, and she was board certified in dermatology in 1988. Dr. Burges spent 17 years in private practice in Charleston. During that time, she participated as an attending physician in dermatology clinics at MUSC and as a lecturer and small group leader in the sophomore medical student microbiology and immunology course. In July 2005, she joined the MUSC faculty full-time and is currently the Chief of Dermatology at the Veterans Administration Hospital. She continues to lecture on viral exanthems and mycology and leads small group sessions in the sophomore microbiology and immunology course. |  | Gene E.
