Cochlear Implant Program

MUSC offers comprehensive cochlear implant services for children and adults, including auditory-verbal training. The program is directed by Dr. Ted Meyer. Candidates for cochlear implants include those receiving minimal to no functional benefit from appropriately fit hearing aids, and those with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Benefits to receiving a cochlear implant include the following:

  • Children implanted between one and two years of age experience the greatest benefit with strong family support, high motivation and realistic expectations.
  • Adults deafened after developing language can achieve a high degree of success in understanding speech
