Dr. George Cooper, IV is a Distinguished University Professor of the Medical University of South Carolina and Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics & Physiology. His primary responsibilities are as  Director of the Gazes Cardiac Research Institute and Chief of Cardiology at the Charleston VA Medical Center.

Dr. Cooper has a long-standing interest in the causes and consequences of cardiac hypertrophy, especially in terms of how maladaptive hypertrophic growth leads to congestive heart failure. He and his colleagues have had extensive long-term support from the NIH and from the VA for their collaborative studies in this area. They are very widely published in premier journals and have garnered extensive national and international recognition for the Cardiology Division of the Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
