Distingished University Professor
Dr. Peter C. Gazes is Professor of Medicine, Distinguished University Professor of Cardiology and former Director, Cardiovascular Division, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Gazes received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated as the first Honor Graduate in 1944 and is a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Board of Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr. Gazes has been very active in educational programs and has directed many cardiology seminars. He has authored and co-authored 220 articles, 21 chapters in books and wrote the book entitled Clinical Cardiology: A Bedside Approach. A book entitled Cardiology Pearls was published in 1994 by C.V. Mosby.
In May, 1980, the Peter C. Gazes Cardiology Society was founded in his honor. In 1985, this Society was changed to the Gazes Cardiac Research Institute. An endowment fund of $2 million dollars for research by this institution has recently been established. The "Gazes Cardiac Research Institute" building was dedicated on October 10, 1996.
Dr. Gazes sits on many national medical committees and editorial boards and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians and the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. He has received numerous awards and honors including The Order of the Palmetto, which is the highest State of South Carolina honor.
He is a member of the American Heart Association and American Federation for Clinical Research. In July 1991, he was appointed Assistant Dean for Alumni Affairs. He is a member of the Archdiocese Council of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. Also past member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Advisory Council.
In 2003 he was listed in the book Profiles in Cardiology, published by the Foundation for Advances in Medicine and Science, Inc., which is a collection of profiles featuring individuals who have made significant contributions to the study of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Gazes' chief research interest is in cardiovascular drugs and coronary artery disease. His major contributions are in clinical cardiology, and teaching.
