Professor of Medicine William H. Spencer III, M.D. graduated from Duke University in 1961 with honors and went to medical school at Duke University and graduated with honors in 1965. He went on to do his internship program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, then completed his residency and fellowship programs at Duke University. He finished the fellowship program in 1972 and joined a private practice, Houston Cardiovascular Associates, in Houston, TX. He was the Director of the Pacemaker Clinic of The Methodist Hospital from 1992- 2000. In 1994, he joined Baylor Cardiovascular Consultants of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, and became Director of the Baylor Heart Clinic. He is currently Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Spencer is active in numerous professional organizations, both international and statewide. In 2001 he was named a distinguished alumnus of Duke University Medical Center. He is active on editorial and advisory boards and committees. His interests include cardiac pacing, interventional cardiology, and the treatment for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM), where he was the first physician in the United States to perform the the nonsurgical septal reduction procedure (NSRT). He has developed and perfected this procedure now to an accepted standard therapy for HOCM and travels the world teaching the procedure to other physicians.
