Adult Emergency Medicine
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is based at The Medical University of South Carolina, a 709 bed institute with approximately 50,000 annual admissions. The 10,000 square foot emergency department hosts 43 beds and a dedicated 128-slice CT scanner off of the resuscitation bay. A pod system is employed which divides the emergency department into separate areas. The A-side hosts 10 beds including the resuscitation bay and seclusion; The B-side hosts 12 beds, the C-side hosts 9 beds; and Team Triage hosts a 5 bed fast track unit. The adult ED receives approximately 50,000 annual visits and is staffed by physicians as well as physician assistants whom have access to all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. In 2009, the emergency department expanded to include a Chest Pain Center in the state-of-the-art Ashley River Tower which hosts 9 beds and received 7,200 annual visits.
