Dr. Raney is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Emergency Medicine, and the Division Chief. Dr. Raney trained for a year at MUSC in Internal Medicine, and then completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Richland Memorial (now Palmetto Richland) in Columbia, South Carolina. His long term goals, beginning out of residency, were to work for about five years in private practice, then return to academics. He accomplished this by joining the group at Roper Hospital in January of 1988, then leaving to return to MUSC in May of 1994. He was one of a group that started the first Emergency Department at MUSC and has toiled over the last 12 years to finally meet his main goal: to establish a residency in Emergency Medicine. The residency was approved in February of 2006, and MUSC is poised to take its first class of EM residents in July of 2007. In addition to directing the Emergency Department at MUSC, Dr. Raney also is Medical Director of MEDUCARE, MUSC's emergency transport and field helicopter service. He is also Chair of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine's Speaker's Bureau and is a national and internationally sought speaker on many topics relative to EM. Dr. Raney's special interests include the business of Emergency Medicine, difficult emergency airways, controlled sedation, the art of effective presentations, and medical history/trivia.
