Geoffrey E. Hayden, MD, FACEP, RDMS, CPC

Dr. Hayden is Assistant Professor and Emergency Ultrasound Director in the Department of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine, and the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

He completed medical school at the University of Virginia and went on to an Emergency Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University.  After a chief residency at Vanderbilt, Dr. Hayden completed an Emergency Ultrasound fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.  He then served as the Emergency Ultrasound Director at Vanderbilt University and New York Methodist Hospital, before joining faculty at MUSC in 2012.

Dr. Hayden has established an Emergency Ultrasound curriculum for Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine residents, fellows, and faculty.  He also directs the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship, which was established in 2013.  His research interests include non-invasive volume assessment of critically ill patients using ultrasound, reliability of bedside ultrasound for soft tissue and musculoskeletal pathology, and ultrasound-guided vascular access efficacy and complications in adult and pediatric populations.  He is also involved in sepsis response and the ED management of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.

He teaches ultrasound courses around the country and has lectured at the American Academy of Emergency Medicine on topics such as the role of ultrasound in undifferentiated hypotension, airway management in the ED, and cervical spine injuries.  He has published in the areas of ultrasonography, bowel obstruction and hernia, cervical spine injuries, and ED sepsis response and management.

Dr. Hayden is a member of the Emergency Ultrasound section at ACEP, and serves on the Board of Governors for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) ultrasound accreditation.
