Hello, On behalf of the faculty, residents, and staff in Charleston, we would like to welcome you to the Medical University of South Carolina Emergency Medicine Program! This year, our third of existence and first with a full complement of residents, is the culmination of our faculty's dedication and our resident's bold and dynamic zeal and dogged determination to help form one of the finest emergency medicine programs in the nation. Our youth is one of our strongest assets as we continue to grow in creative new directions allowing for the maximal educational benefit of our residents. Our attending faculty are diverse in practice-style, exceedingly knowledgeable, and excited to teach. While our program is young, the Medical University is anything but and has a long and storied history of resident medical education(it is the oldest medical university in the south). This allows us to work alongside our colleagues in an environment of mutual respect and shared common purpose. Our pathology is varied with an excellent mix of surgical and medical patients. We practice in a level-one trauma center that cares for patients for the eastern half of South Carolina while the Children's Hospital, Hollings Cancer Center, and the new Ashley River Tower affords us the opportunity to see a diverse and often complex patient population. Our state-of-the-art Simulation Center, mock oral boards, excellent research opportunities, pig labs, procedure labs, and journal club all dove-tail beautifully with our terrific weekly didactics. This melding of clinical and scholastic education is the cornerstone of our program and as we grow we are continually looking for further opportunities and excited new residents to improve upon our solid foundation. Charleston itself is a joy to live in with its combination of Southern charm, historical beauty, and temperate climate. Our residents all live near, or on, the beach and yet the drive, or bike, to work is not hampered by the traffic and stress of larger urban cities. Boating and kayaking are very popular while camping on Edisto Island, tubing the Edisto River, or hiking through the Francis Marion Forest are common activities among faculty and staff here. Furthermore, the mountains are only a short drive away in the upstate and provide further outdoor entertainment. Finally, perhaps our greatest attribute of all are the people who make this emergency program what it is today. Everyone from the emergency department volunteers up through the attending faculty work in a congenial environment and have supported this endeavor every step of the way from the program's inception to the present day. It really is a joy to see so many good friends and co-workers on a daily basis and we are proud of our commitment to the program and to the good people of the low-country. We thank you for your interest in our program and hope you will further consider us for your post-graduate emergency medicine education. Should you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us at the information below. We would love to hear from you! Sincerely, Andrew & Jamie | |
