Message from the Chiefs...

Hello and Thank you for your interest in MUSC Emergency Medicine. Our program while ever evolving, has outgrown its "new program" label and as we embark on our 5th year our aspirations are to ascend the ranks towards being one of the premier programs in the country. On a day to day basis, and annually we are achieving that goal in large part due to the interest of high caliber candidates like yourselves as well as the investment of our faculty and institution.

By virtue of our location we are afforded an exceptional balance of work and play. Charleston S.C. is a geographic and cultural hub of the Southeast. Pristine beaches and marshes are juxtaposed against century old cobbled streets wrought with history and charm. Surfing, fishing, and kayaking are no more than 20 minutes from the door of the ED, while Charleston's restaurants, bars, and boutiques boast some of the best "Low Country" fare in the South. Charleston is family friendly and a great place to be single as the area's numerous parks and plantations play host to countless concerts and festivals throughout the year. Housing is affordable and varies from urban lofts, to quaint neighborhoods, to beach side homes.

Charleston's locale and history also play a large role in our day to day training. MUSC is the level 1 Trauma Center in Eastern South Carolina. We work intimately with our nationally recognized Neuro/Stroke and Cardiology teams who provide care to patients from across the state. As with many academic institutions we are privileged to take care of a large swath of the population as well as an array of medical and surgical pathology. In our short tenure the residency has gained respect throughout the hospital as being competent and dependable clinicians. With regard to training, protected didactics reinforce our knowledge and prepare us for future board exams, while our procedural skills are further refined in our state of the art high fidelity Simulation Lab. Humility and normalcy characterize the faculty within our residency and it is these qualities that have fostered a nonmalignant and professional environment to accomplish the program's ultimate goal of training competent, independent practitioners of quality Emergency Medicine.

We encourage you to do your due diligence when it comes to pursuing your post graduate residency training. So please read on, call and/or e-mail with questions, and good luck in your future endeavors. We hope to see you in Charleston this fall.

Regards.

Dr. Scott Witt & Dr. Kevin Carpenter
