Pediatric Emergency Medicine
The Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) of the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital is a newly renovated (Nov 2008) twelve bed unit with an addtional Quick Care area available on evenings. The annual census is over 21,000 and over 13% of the patients are admitted to the hospital.  Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) physicians provide 24 hour per day coverage. Pediatric subspecialty services are readily available for consultation. The PED is a Level I Trauma Center and the PED nurse, physician and pediatric resident staff are key members of the Pediatric Trauma Team. As faculty of the Pediatric Department the PEM physicians are also active in teaching and clinical research. A PEM Felllowship was recently approved with the first fellow starting July 2009.
