Dr. Huang earned his M.D. at Shanghai Second Medical University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Shanghai Sixth Hospital. After coming to the United States, Dr. Huang completed his Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he also spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow.
Dr. Huang was appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor at MUSC in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Medical Genetics in 1994, where he is also a faculty member of the College of Graduate Studies and a Health Research Scientist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2012.
Dr. Huang has consistently mentored undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows as well as a number of research trainees. He also participated in teaching “Introduction of Epidemiology” in the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology” as well as organizes the endocrine lecture series and journal club for clinical and research fellows.
Dr. Huang is a member of the American Heart Association and serves on their Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Council. He is also a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Physiological Society.
Dr. Huang is interested in the role of inflammation in diabetic complications including atherosclerosis and periodontal disease. Currently, Dr. Huang serves as Principal Investigator on a VA Merit Review Grant, “Toll-like receptor and atherosclerosis in diabetes” and a NIH RO1, “The effect of statin on diabetes-associated periodontal disease”. Dr. Huang is a collaborative researcher as evidenced by his interactions with investigators in the College of Dental Medicine. He also served as co-investigator on the Endocrinology Program Project, “Markers and Mechanisms of Macrovascular Disease in IDDM” previously. Dr. Huang has published 53 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently serving as a member of VA Merit Review Cardiovascular Study Section and of Biosafety Committee in Charleston VAMC.
