Yan Huang, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor

Dr. Huang earned his M.D. at Shanghai Second Medical University, where he was an honors graduate. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a one year fellowship in Cardiology at Shanghai Sixth Hospital – an amazing achievement given the level of civil unrest in China before and during these years. After coming to the United States, Dr. Huang completed his Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology at the University of Cincinnati, where he spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow.

Dr. Huang was appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor at MUSC in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Medical Genetics in 1994, where he is also a member of the College of Graduate Studies and a Research Scientist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006.

Dr. Huang has consistently mentored undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows as well as a number of research trainees as detail on his CV.  He also teaches “Introduction of Epidemiology” in the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology”, as well as organizing the endocrine lecture series for clinical and research fellows.  Dr. Huang is a member of the American Heart Association and serves on their Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Council.  He is also a member of the American Diabetes Association and the American Physiological Society.

Dr. Huang originally came to MUSC to work in the laboratory of Maria Lopes-Virella, M.D., Ph.D. in the Division of Endocrinology.  Since that time he has grown into an independent investigator. Dr. Huang presently serves as Principal Investigator on a VA Merit Review Grant, “Diabetes and the stability of atherosclerotic plaques” and an NIH RO1, “Diabetes and periodontal gene expression”. Dr. Huang is a collaborative researcher as evidenced by his interactions with investigators in the College of Dental Medicine and College of Graduate Studies. He also serves as Co-Investigator on the Endocrinology Program Project, “Markers and Mechanisms of Macrovascular Disease in IDDM”. His focus going forward will be on the pathobiology of MMPs in coronary artery disease and periodontal disease.

Dr. Huang has published 34 articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Lipid Research, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Immunology, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Endocrinology, Atherosclerosis, Clinical Immunology and Journal of Periodontal Research. He has served as a manuscript reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology, Circulation, Diabetes, Metabolism, Life Science, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and the Archive of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Dr. Huang served as a member of the VA Research and Development Committee for 3 years at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.  He is presently a member of the VA Biosafety Committee.
