Lawrence W. Comerford, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Comerford is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Comerford graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1983 and served on active duty with the U. S. Navy until 1993.  He attended medical school here at the Medical University of South Carolina, receiving his M. D. degree in 1997.  He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 2000 and the completed a 3 year Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2003.  He was awarded a Master of Science in Health Evaluation Sciences while at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Comerford is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Comerford is a member of several professional organizations including the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Southern Medical Association, South Carolina Gastroenterology Association and the Charleston Medical Society.

He has received several honors/awards during his career including the Department of Medicine's "Attitude, Commitment, and Excellence Award" from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, the American College of Gastroenterology Fellow Clinical Research Award and the American College of Gastroenterology/Centocor IBD Abstract Award.

Dr. Comerford's clinical interest includes treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.  He is also very active in medical education and has won awards at MUSC for his teaching of medical students and residents.  He serves as the Associate Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program and is the Gastroenterology Division Coordinator for Graduate Medical Education.
