Joseph Romagnuolo, M.D., MSc, FRCPC, FASGE, FACG

Dr. Romagnuolo, M.D., is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Board-certified gastroenterologist), and is cross-appointed to the Division of Biometry, Bioinformatics and Epidemiology, at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is the Director of Clinical Research for Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Romagnuolo received his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Toronto in 1994. He completed an MSc degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and a two-year advanced endoscopy fellowship, including ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), at McGill University and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Dr. Romagnuolo is a member of several national/international organizations, including the Canadian Medical Association; Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG); American Gastroenterological Association (AGA); American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE); American College of Gastroenterology (ACG); and the American College of Physicians (ACP). He sat on the Randomized Controlled Trials Committee of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), the ASGE Quality in Endoscopy Committee, the CAG endoscopy committee, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology editorial advisory board. He was co-director of the international ASGE postgraduate endoscopy course (2006). He has been on several MUSC Committees including Graduate Studies Master’s student committees, Hollings Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee, and the Department of Medicine Promotions and Tenure Committee. He is the new chair of the ASGE Research Committee.

Dr. Romagnuolo has received numerous awards and honors during his career, including Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), the ASGE, the ACG, the AGA, and the ACP; Young Investigator Award from CAG and CIHR; Population Health Young Investigator Award from AHFMR; Endoscopy foundation lecture for the British Society of Gastroenterology. He was the recipient of the prestigious ASGE Mid-career Endoscopic Mentoring Award for 2009-11, and received the 2009 MUSC Foundation Teaching Excellence (Clinical Mentor) Award.

Dr. Romagnuolo’s research interests are in clinical trials, economic analysis, meta-analysis, and outcomes  and quality research in endoscopy, especially concerning ERCP and EUS, biliopancreatic diseases, GI malignancy and bleeding, and NOTES. He has received funding from NIH, ASGE, CIHR, AHFMR, and industry. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications, in addition to over five book chapters and over 150 abstracts.
