Mark Lyles, M.D.

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Mark Lyles currently serves as Chief Strategic Officer for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Clinical Enterprise. In this role, Mark is responsible for setting MUSC’s organizational priorities, for guiding development of an integrated academic medical center, and for managing MUSC’s hospital-based clinics.

In addition to his current clinical responsibilities as a general internist, Mark has previously held numerous administrative roles, including the position of senior associate dean for clinical affairs in the MUSC College of Medicine. Mark has also spent two years at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in Washington, DC, in the role of senior director of health care affairs, where he helped AAMC members to introduce innovative and transformative care delivery and payment models. During his time at AAMC, Mark also taught health policy analysis as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University School of Business.

Complementing his academic career, Mark served for three years as worldwide senior medical director for Amicus Therapeutics, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel small molecule therapies for genetic diseases that result from protein misfolding. Mark has also worked in a variety of insurance settings, including Humana’s Innovation Center in Louisville, Kentucky, and as a clinical resource reviewer for the largest Medicaid HMO in Philadelphia.

A native of Sumter, SC, Mark earned his medical degree and completed his residency at MUSC; he completed a fellowship in quality management and managed care at the University of Pennsylvania Health System; and he earned an MBA in healthcare management from the Wharton School.
