Professor of Medicine
Jan N. Basile, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine/Geriatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina and Director of the Primary Care Service Line at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, both in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Basile received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his MD from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He served his internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was also chief resident. Dr. Basile is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is double-boarded in medicine and geriatrics. A recipient of many honors and awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award And the Golden Apple Award at the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Basile’s interests involves hypertension and vascular disease. His research interests include outcome-based studies involving hypertension, lipid disorders, kidney disease and diabetes. He has and is currently participating in several large trials evaluating the effect of pharmacologic therapy on improving outcome. These include the recently completed Antihypertensive and Lipid Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) as well as the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) Trial (2000-2008), both under the auspices of The National Heart Lung Blood Institute. In addition, he is a Hypertension Consultant to the Hypertension Field Advisory Committee in the Central Office of the Department of Veteran Affairs. Dr. Basile is a frequent lecturer and has published a total of over 150 articles, book chapters and abstracts. He participated in writing the Seventh Report on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7). He is committed to writing on |  | Jan Basile, M.D. |

primary care issues, including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, heart failure and lipid disorders in an effort to improve the level of care provided by the primary care physician. He sits on the editorial board of several journals, including the Southern Medical Journal, and is Senior Editor of The Journal of Clinical Hypertension, in which he contributes a regular feature entitled “Analysis of Recent Papers in Hypertension”.
