John R. Feussner, M.D., MPH

Dr. Feussner is Distinguished University Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Feussner is also Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and the Department of Neurology.

Before becoming Chairman of Medicine, Dr. Feussner was the Chief Research and Development Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1996 to 2002.  During that time, he served also as the Director of the VA Cooperative Studies Program.  During his term as the Director of VA CSP, Dr. Feussner dramatically expanded the VA budget dedicated to clinical trials; established epidemiology research centers focused on population based research; created formal international collaborations with the United Kingdom MRC and the Canadian CIHR; dramatically expanded trials collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry; and initiated novel trials in surgery, health services research, and rehabilitation medicine.  While in Washington Dr. Feussner served on the President’s Committee on Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy.  He was Chairman of the Gulf War illnesses research working group for the consortium of the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Defense, and Health and Human Services.  He served on the Policy Council for the AHCPR and the Clinical Trials Inquiry Panel for the United

Kingdom’s MRC.  He currently serves on multiple advisory committees for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.  Dr. Feussner recently completed a four year term as a member of the Clinical Research Roundtable for the Institute of Medicine.

Prior to his time in Washington, Dr. Feussner was a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center.  Dr. Feussner co-founded and co-directed the Biometry training program at Duke in 1986, one of the first clinical research training programs directed specifically to physician investigators.

Dr. Feussner completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania; received his MD degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, and his MPH degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Feussner continues as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Administration at the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina.

He has authored or co-authored over 160 scientific publications.
Dr. Feussner has received numerous honors.  He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.  Dr. Feussner was elected to Delta Omega, the Honorary Public Health Society.   He was the first recipient of the Wolcott Award for Clinical Excellence from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  He received a Distinguished Investigator Award from the Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina, and the Medical Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement from the University of Vermont.  He was the second recipient of the John Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research from the Society of General Internal Medicine.
