Cungui Mao, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Medicine
Joint Assistant  Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Joint Assistant  Professor of Dermatology

Dr. Mao is an Assistant Professor of Medicine.  He received his Ph.D. from East China Normal University/Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry, Shanghai, China.  He completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Laboratory of Aging and Cancer Biology, and Cardiology Division from Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina and National Key Lab of Molecular Genetics, Shanghai Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China.

Dr. Mao is interested in the metabolism of sphingolipids and roles of sphingolipids in biological responses, such as cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. He is currently focusing on the biochemical characterization and functional analysis of several mammalian alkaline ceramidases that were recently cloned in his laboratory.  Studies by his laboratory demonstrate that these ceramidases play important roles in regulating the levels of ceramides, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate, the three bioactive lipids mediating a variety of biological responses. His laboratory is supported by different funds, including NIH research grants.
