Lina M. Obeid, M.D.

Dr. Obeid is the Boyle Endowed Chair Professor of Medicine.  She received her MD with distinction from American University of Beirut, Lebanon and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.  She completed her fellowship training in endocrinology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Obeid is a Paul Beeson Physician Faculty Scholar.  Dr. Obeid is a member of the Association of American Physicians, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Federation for Clinical Research, American Geriatrics Society, Gerontological Society of America, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.  Dr. Obeid serves on NIH study section and on several editorial boards.  She is a member of the following MUSC committees: Chair, Appointment, Promotion & Tenure Committee; Advisory Committee, Neuroscience Institute; Steering committee member for the NHLBI Short-term Training Grant for Minority Medical Students; Associate Director for Biology of Aging, Center for Study of Aging; Member, MUSC Strategic Plan; Director, and Office of Diversity.

Dr. Obeid teaches medical students and housestaff at the Geriatrics outpatient clinic at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  She teaches several spring classes in Biochemistry and Lipids at the Medical University of South Carolina.  She also instructs and mentors graduate students and junior faculty.  She is Director of a Center of Biomedical Excellence (COBRE) in Lipidomics and Pathology.

Dr. Obeid's research focuses on the role of novel lipid mediators in the regulation of cancer growth, senescence, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and inflammation.  She has several ongoing funded projects (R01 and VA Merit Award).  They are: a) Identifying and characterizing the role of Sphingosine Phosphate Role in regulation of inflammation; b) Studying the role of Mitochondrial Ceramide in Chemotherapy-induced Apoptosis; c) Role of a Novel Human Ceramidase in Apoptosis and Senescence; and d) Role for Sphingosine Kinase and Sphingosine-1-Phosphate in Tumor Angiogenesis.  From these projects, she hopes to develop novel therapeutic approaches to modulate cancer and inflammatory processes.
