William P. Moran, MD, M.S.
Division Director, Professor

Welcome to the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at MUSC.  At a time when the American population is aging, medicine is growing increasingly complex, and the cost of care is growing explosively, it is critical for adults, especially older adults, to have a personal care physician who can guide and advise them.  The Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics (GIMG) at MUSC is committed to providing exceptional quality of care which is comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered and responsive to the needs of adults.  Our faculty members are all board certified internists specializing in adult care, and all believe that MUSC patients deserve the best care possible.

Personal care is provided to outpatients by faculty located in the University Internal Medicine clinic on the 8th floor of Rutledge Tower at the MUSC campus, at East Cooper Regional Medical Center and in the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.  The GIMG inpatient physician group staffs both MUSC and East Cooper Regional Medical Center.  The GIMG faculty provides General Internal Medicine pre-operative and peri-operative consultation services.  GIMG also staffs the MUSC Palliative Care consultation service at MUSC hospital.

Beyond patient care, the Division is also committed to enhance and support the other missions of the Medical University of South Carolina in the domains of education and clinical/health services research. The Division accomplishes this mission by maintaining an environment conducive to academic excellence in education and research.

The Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at MUSC serves a major role in educating and training the next generation of physicians.  The division emphasizes evidence-based General Internal Medicine and Geriatric practice and includes GIMG conferences, periodic workshops and seminars. The GIMG faculty is integral to the Medical School curriculum in all years of undergraduate experience, as well as the Internal Medicine Residency Program.  Our Fellowship program emphasizes a balance of clinical, educational and research development, including a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research.  Our fellows are fully prepared and all our fellows have successfully pursued academic careers.

Our nationally recognized faculty conducts research of highest scientific standards, targeting areas such health care disparities, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, access to care for underserved and vulnerable populations, aging and geriatric care, professional education, and medical informatics.  Division faculty members lead the MUSC Center for Health Disparities Research. Clinical and health services research is conducted in collaboration with a number of MUSC groups, including the Department of Biometry and Biostatistics, Center for Health Care Studies, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

We welcome you to the Division web site and ask that you contact us if you need further information.
