Dr. Kraft’s research involves an understanding of the role of signal transduction in cancer. Early in his career, he demonstrated that protein kinase C was regulated by phorbol ester tumor promoters. Later he discovered that these promoters stimulated a cascade of protein kinases, the Jun Amino Terminal protein kinases, which are important in regulating responses to hormones, growth factors, cell stress, and death. He has taken bryostatin 1, a protein kinase C regulator, from the bench to the bedside, completing clinical trials of this agent.
