Dr. Sonya Coaxum is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology.  She earned her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Benedict College, Columbia, SC in 1995.  She then received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Meharry Medical College, Nashville,TN in 2000.  She completed her postdoctoral training in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI and the Department of Physiology at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL. She joined the Division of Nephrology at MUSC as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2004. 

Dr. Coaxum’s research focuses on the structural aspects of the G protein-coupled 5-HT1A receptor and how it relates to the function of the receptor.  Her research also focuses on signaling pathways in podocyte.
