M. Francesca Egidi, M.D.

Professor

Dr. Egidi is the Medical Director for the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at the Medical University of South Carolina where she joined in 2007.  She is the Director for the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Nephrology accredited renal transplant fellowship.  Dr. Egidi spent the last 10 years at the University of Tennessee, Memphis where she was occupying the same position and was the Renal Health Center Director.  She is a graduate of the University of Milan (Italy) where she completed her residency and fellowship in internal medicine/nephrology.  She also has been a fellow in the Transplant Immunology Laboratory at the University of Helsinki (Finland).  Under the direction of Professor Pekka Hayry, Dr. Egidi learned different techniques for detecting and quantifying the rejection of transplanted organs and to establishing different immunological pathways.  Due to this unique expertise in the transplant field, Dr. Egidi was offered a faculty position at the University of Iowa where the Surgical Team was pioneering the pancreas transplantation for Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes.  The interest and expertise in the field of kidney and pancreas transplantation lead to her hiring at the University of Pittsburg where beside clinical activities, she established a laboratory for transplant cytology.   She is a member of the Italian Society of Nephrology, International Transplantation Society, International Pancreas and Islet Association, Cell Transplantation Society, American Society of Transplant Physicians, and American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Egidi has been invited to give lectures and speak at conferences in the United States and abroad.  She is the author of several publications and book chapters.

Dr. Egidi's research interest has been focused not only in the graft rejection mechanisms but in other areas such as chronic allograft nephropathy, polyoma nephropathy, post-transplant hyperglycemia, and new immunosuppressive regimens.
