Associate Professor Dr. Garnovskaya received her Ph.D. in 1983 from the I.M. Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia. Upon arrival to the United States in 1991, Dr. Garnovskaya completed her postdoctoral studies at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y. and at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. In 1996 Dr. Garnovskaya was appointed as an Assistant and in 2003 as an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C. Dr. Garnovskaya also served as a Research Health Scientist with the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran's Affairs Medical Center from 1999-2011. Dr. Garnovskaya's research interests focus on fundamental signal transduction pathways that regulate proliferation of vascular smooth and kidney cells. She also studies mechanisms of regulation of sodium/proton (Na+/H+) exchange in different cell types, and roles of G protein-coupled receptors in the pathogenesis of Polycystic kidney disease. Dr. Garnovskaya was awarded grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Heart Association. She is a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the American Heath Association. Current research projects: - Integrin- and G protein- coupled receptor-induced signaling in vascular smooth muscles cells.
- The crosstalk between receptor tyrosine kinases (Epidermal growth factor receptor) and G protein-coupled receptors (the bradykinin B2 receptor) signaling in kidney cells.
