Florence Hutchison, M.D.
Dr. Hutchison is the Chief of Staff at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and Associate Dean and Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is a graduate of Millsaps College and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, CA, and her fellowship in nephrology at the VA Medical Center in Martinez, CA. Dr. Hutchison is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
After completion of her fellowship, she served as a staff nephrologist at the VA Medical Center in Martinez, CA, and was also Assistant Professor of Medicine at UC, Davis. Dr. Hutchison became Chief, Dialysis Unit at the VA Medical Center, Charleston, SC in 1989, as well as Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. She accepted the position of Chief, Medical Speciality Service in 1997, and was appointed Chief of Staff in 2000.
Dr. Hutchison is also an accomplished and consistently funded researcher. Her efforts contributed to the award of highly competitive and prestigious REAP (Research Enchancement Award Program) focused on research in kidney disease and to the development of a very successful Health Services Research REAP at the Charleston VAMC. Dr. Hutchison is the lead for the VISN 7 ICG Systems Redesign Grant.
Dr. Hutchison has served as the Director of the VISN 7 Research Service Line, the Chair of the VISN 7 Compliance Committee, and as an advisor to the National VA Office of Research Compliance and Assurance. Outside the VA, she has served as Program Chair for the national Women in Nephrology organization, as a member of the Program Committee for the National Kidney Foundation, a member of the Public Advisory Committee for the American Physiological Association, as a member of the nominating committee of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation to name only a few of her professional contributions. Currently she Co-Chair of the VISN 7 Health Systems Council, Co-Chair of the Systems Improvement Subcommittee of the Systems Redesign Steering Committee, a member of the VA National Finance Committee, and serves on the VHA Chiefs of Staff Advisory Board.
She has been an invited speaker and consultant for numerous VAs and academic medical centers and professional organizations and has been recognized by numerous awards for teaching and leadership over the years, receiving the prestigious national VA Mark Wolcott Award for Excellence in Clinical Leadership in 2005.
