David W. Ploth, M.D.
David W. Ploth, M.D. is A.V. Williams Jr. Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, S.C. Dr. Ploth is a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Medicine and trained in Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Chicago, the University of Iowa and the University of Munich. He rose to the rank of Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he served from 1975 to 1987. He accepted the William's Professorship and Division Director position at MUSC in 1987. He stepped down from the Division Director position in 2011. Ploth has basic research interests in renal physiology and pathophysiology of renal vascular hypertension. He also has research interests in the physiology and pathophysiology of the renin-angiotensin and kinin-kallikrein systems. His clinical interests focus on clinical nephrology and diagnosis and management of renal-vascular and essential hypertension. He is past member of Council and President of the South Carolina Affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation. He served as member of Council and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI) 1995-2003 and was President of the SSCI, 2003.
