Margaret Markiewicz, M.D.

Dr.Margaret Markiewicz is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Rheumatology & Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received an M.D. at the Medical University of Wroclaw, Poland. She joined the Division of Rheumatology at MUSC in 1997 and held a postdoctoral position until 2002.

Dr. Markiewicz's research interests are concentrated on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of vascular changes and impaired collagen biosynthesis during chronological aging. Presently her research focuses on: 1) influence of estrogens on collagen deposition in the skin 2) the role of Estrogen Receptors in regulating gene programs mediating vessel homeostasis.

Identifying and targeting the age-related changes that lead to the dysregulation of angiogenic pathways may provide novel strategies to prevent vascular pathologies which are linked to increased age (ex. peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and cerebral ischemia).
