Margaret Markiewicz, M.D.

Dr.Margaret Markiewicz is a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Rheumatology & Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received an M.D. at the Medical University of Wroclaw, Poland. She joined the Division of Rheumatology at MUSC in 1997 and held a postdoctoral position until 2002.

Dr. Markiewicz research interests are concentrated on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of vascular changes and excessive collagen deposition in skin of scleroderma patients. Presently her research focuses on: 1) influence of estrogens and androgens on collagen deposition in the skin 2) the contribution of transcription factor Fli1 to the process of cutaneous fibrosis 3) the role of CTGF in the process of new vessel formation in scleroderma.

She is the principal investigator on the grant from National Scleroderma Foundation.
