Dr. Hideharu Sekine is a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Rheumatology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Fukushima Medical University (Japan) in 1993 and 1997, respectively. Following two years in resident in Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology, he held a postdoctoral position from 1999 to 2003 at the Medical University of South Carolina under the mentorship of Dr. Gary Gilkeson. Dr. Sekine left MUSC in 2003 to assume a faculty position at Fukushima Medical University. In 2005, he returned to MUSC achieving the position of Assistant Professor. Dr. Sekine has been pursuing studies on the role of the MHC in the production of autoantibodies, the mechanisms of proteinuria in glomerulonephritis and the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) protein Msh5 that has a role in immunoglobulin class switch recombination and human immunodeficiency in collaboration with Dr. Gilkeson (MUSC) Dr. Tim Behrens (Genentech), and Drs. Qian-Pan and Lennart Hammarstrom (Karolinska Institutet). In collaboration with Dr. Steve Tomlinson (Microbiology and Immunology, MUSC), he has been pursuing studies on the treatment of lupus glomerulonephritis by using complement alternative pathway inhibitor. His research is currently supported by NIH R21 (PI), US Immunodeficiency Network (PI) and The U.S. Department of Defense (Co-Investigator) awards. He is a member of the American Association of Immunology (AAI) and the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine.
