After receiving his Doctorate of Medicine in 1979 at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Smith completed his residency in internal medicine in 1982 at the University of North Carolina. He came to the Medical University of South Carolina to as a rheumatology fellow in 1982 and joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1984 when that fellowship was completed. He is now Professor of Medicine. In addition to serving on the MUSC faculty, he also serves as a Consultant and Attending in Medicine at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. Each week, he holds rheumatology clinics in the West Ashley Bone and Joint Center and in downtown Charleston at MUSC. His particular clinical and research interests include scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis. His teaching interests include lectures to students, medical residents, and primary care physicians, including CME courses. Dr. Smith has been the recipient of several awards, honors, and society memberships throughout his medical career.
