The course is an introduction to management of complex digestive diseases and the clinical research and evaluation techniques used to improve it. This student will be exposed to different aspects of digestive disease, including luminal gastroenterology, pancreatic and biliary diseases, hepatology, motility disorders, nutrition and cancer. There will be emphasis on new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (including Radiology, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Advanced Endoscopy). Students will participate in all of the academic activities of the Digestive Disease Center including the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine. Involvement in ongoing research projects is encouraged, to improve knowledge of research techniques and informatics tools. There is no call.
Course Objectives
Obtain an overview of modern management of a variety of digestive diseases in a tertiary referral environment, utilizing state of the art techniques, and methods of evaluation.
Instructional Methodology
Attendance at numerous daily conferences within the Digestive Disease Center, clinics and procedures. Under the direction of the primary instructor, students will be allocated one or more other faculty mentors for specific research and training opportunities, as appropriate. Evaluations will be based on feedback from the relevant faculty at the conclusion of the elective.
