This elective provides a broad and integrated exposure to the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art management of patients with a variety of solid-organ tumors, hematologic malignancies, and other hematologic disorders including anemias and hereditary and acquired bleeding and clotting disorders. This is accomplished by assignment to the Consultation Service, participation in rounds on the inpatient Oncology-Hematology Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, attendance at the outpatient clinics, and formal training with the instructor in the interpretation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates.
Course Objectives
Clinical presentation, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art management of patients with a variety of cancers, hematologic malignancies and other hematologic disorders including anemias, hereditary an acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
Instructional Methodology
Participation in formal conferences of the Hematology/Oncology Division, including the Friday Seminar Series, Chief-of-Service rounds, Consultation Service conference, tumor boards and Journal Club. Case-by-case discussion on rounds and in outpatient clinics Microscopic morphology interpretation sessions with the instructors Patient Load - 3-4 Call - None
Specifics
Please report to the Program Coordinator, Tara Kirby, in the Hem/Onc. Office in 903 CSB at 9 a.m. the first day of service.
Hem/Onc. offers a variety of activities in which students can engage for an elective experience. Please page Dr. Larry Afrin (792-2123, pager #14481) at least two weeks ahead of time to discuss your interests so that he can try to arrange for the specific experience you seek.
The student is graded by the Attending Physician on the Service which the student has chosen.
The student will receive the Division’s standing monthly activities schedule when they report to the Coordinator on the first day. A student’s activity schedule will vary in accordance with the experience custom-developed for that student. All students will participate in as many of the Division’s conferences as possible, including at least one tumor board each week.
