This course provides student participation in the activities of the division: inpatient consultations, several outpatient clinics (Endocrinology, Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid – private consultations), investigation of patients with endocrine/metabolic problems, weekly case conferences, noon house staff conferences, weekly conferences with the division (a topic oriented conference) and Journal Club. Direct contact with attendings is employed in all clinical settings.

Learn to evaluate endocrine disorders commonly seen in primary care Learn treatment strategies for these diseases Learn the importance of laboratory investigation in evaluations Introduction to endocrine research by faculty investigators Learn to critically assess medical literature
Students should report to Jennifer Dingle at 8 a.m. in 816 CSB on the first day of service.
Grades will be based on evaluations completed by each of the faculty with whom the student has contact. The final grade will be assigned by the course director, Dr. Luttrell.
Schedules will be handed out at the start of the elective. The specific assignments vary slightly depending on which attendings are in town and whether there are one or two students in the block.
Students will split time between general endocrinology clinics at MUSC and the VA, disease-focused endocrine clinics, and the inpatient consult service with emphasis on the inpatient management of diabetes mellitus.
