Description

Exposure to the full spectrum of diagnosis and treatment of congestive heart failure.

Course Objectives

Understand pathophysiology, recognize clinical features of congestive heart failure
Pharmacological and device therapy of congestive heart failure
Arrhythmia recognition and therapy in congestive heart failure
Evaluation for heart transplant including post transplant care

Instructional Methodology (approximate # of hours per week)

Lectures - 3
Rounds/Discussions - 10

Patient Load - 4-6
Call - 1 as needed only for Heart Transplant

Specifics

Students should report to Dr. Van Bakel's office at 1233 Rutledge Tower after orientation the first day of service.

Students will be assigned to the Heart Failure and Transplant Team.  Students will need to inform Dr. Van Bakel AND the student coordinator (Mary Ann Snell, 792-7282 or snellma@musc.edu) whether they will be doing a 2 or 4 week rotation (there is no difference between the two – just a shorter experience).

The students will receive their grade from Dr. Van Bakel.

Students will receive an overview of the rotation and a schedule when they meet with Dr. Van Bakel on the first day.
