The Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is dedicated to providing the finest in patient care while also seeking new and innovative solutions to the many diseases treated in our wide range of disciplines. The department includes the divisions of:
Cardiology
Emergency Medicine
Endocrinology
General Internal Medicine/Geriatrics
Gastroenterology
Hematology/Oncology
Infectious Disease
Nephrology
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Rheumatology. With such a wide range of disciplines, we are able to care for virtually any patient problem, and do so with the expertise one would expect from a major university medical center. Our mission includes the education of future physicians through our active role in medical student education. Success in achieving this mission relies heavily on our most valuable asset, our faculty. The recruitment, mentoring, and retention of high quality faculty members rank among our most important goals. These faculties serve as mentors for our medical students and lead major educational programs on campus. | | Julius Sagel, M.D. Vice Chair of Education | Throughout my career I’ve always practiced medicine with this thought in mind: ‘As physicians we make clinical judgments, but never judge the patient.’ This is a very important value taught at MUSC, a tradition that I hope will forever be upheld.” |

Medical school has always challenged the brightest and best-prepared minds. Here at MUSC we created a curriculum to teach and train doctors to be better prepared to handle the realities of a new era in medicine. As a medical student, you have accepted the challenge of learning a profession that is ever changing. The goal is to master the art of learning itself. The study of medicine is the study of relationships. Each course and year builds on your relationships at each level. Throughout your medical school education you will experience the correlation between basic science concepts, clinical practice, interventions, and therapies. You will learn to see, feel, hear, and think medically in real-time. |
