Pulmonary Objectives

Educational Purpose and Goals
The field of Pulmonary Medicine involves the diagnosis and management of diseases of the upper airways, lungs, mediastinum, pleura, and chest wall.  This course will provide a review of common pulmonary diseases including obstructive lung disease (e.g. COPD, asthma), lung masses, pulmonary emboli, and pleural effusions.  Should time allow, there will be review of additional topics that may include interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, and obstructive sleep apnea.

The student should be able to know the presenting signs and symptoms, and the rationale for the appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment of these diseases.

Objectives & Cases Index

The student should have an understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases and be able to develop a comprehensive differential diagnosis.  The student will understand the appropriate diagnostic testing that may include pulmonary function testing, radiographic studies, bronchoscopy, pleural fluid analysis, echocardiography, and polysomnography, among others.

Teaching Method
This course will be a small-group, interactive discussion between the professor and the students.  The presentation will be case-based, using real patient data as a means of discussing the topics.  A PowerPoint slide presentation will be used only as a means of showing specific patient data (i.e. symptoms, signs and testing data) that may include important images, such as a relevant CXR or CT scan that is pertinent to the discussion.  There will be core cases for presentation, with additional topics that could be covered should time allow.  The students should come prepared to think out loud and participate in the discussion.

Educational Resources
A small syllabus containing reviews of the topics to be discussed will be provided.  The course itself will be faculty member instruction through an interactive discussion with the students.

Evaluation of Competence
There will not be a formal evaluation of the student by the faculty.
