Welcome Message from the Chief Residents

Welcome Message from the Chief Residents

Thank you for visiting our website. We hope you will find it informative and helpful, and if you have additional questions, we hope you will contact us directly. Over the past three years, the Medical University of South Carolina has earned a special place in our hearts. On your search for a residency program, it is important to find a place that best fits you and where you are surrounded by people with whom you resonate. We invite you to explore MUSC, the Department of Medicine, and Charleston to see if fits you as well.

The people of MUSC and Charleston have made the greatest impact on our residency experiences. There is an overwhelming passion for life and a compassion for others spread amongst MUSC staff of all levels. We’ve all made lifelong friendships with our colleagues here, as evidenced by the amount of time we spend together outside of work at dinners, happy hours, at the beach, etc. The approachable nature and support from attendings, fellows, nurses, and support staff are unparalleled.  As for the people of Charleston, an attitude of southern hospitality echoes throughout the peninsula.

MUSC’s Internal Medicine residency program is based on a foundation of general internal medicine with ample exposure to subspecialty training. Rotating at three different hospitals, you will experience a wide breadth of pathology within various settings including government-run VA system. By working with physician leaders in their subspecialty fields, residents gain early access to personal career guidance and research opportunities. Our outpatient clinical experience is equally diverse. Embedded within the University Internal Medicine resident clinic experience is subspecialty exposure, such as orthopedic surgery, ENT, Dermatology, and Neurology as well as traditional outpatient medicine specialties such as ID, gastroenterology, rheumatology, and cardiology.

If we haven’t convinced you yet, come visit us! After all, Condé Nast Traveler has rated Charleston the top U.S. city to visit for the past four years. Charleston offers beautiful beaches, great golf, a thriving music and art scene, a vibrant foodie scene with multiple James Beard award-winning restaurants, and a city seeping with charm and history.

Each program you interview at this year will highlight its many strengths and unique characteristics. Like most academic programs, MUSC offers research opportunities, state-of-the-art facilities and interesting pathology; however, what sets MUSC apart are the people you work beside and the patients you work for. Combining all of these attributes in the picturesque setting of Charleston was for us a no-brainer. We hope it is for you as well.

All the Best,

Chad Kurzynske, MD

Ben Bevill, MD

Elizabeth Kirkland, MD
