Welcome Message from the Chief Residents

Welcome to our web site.  We hope you will find it informative and helpful, and, if you have additional questions, we hope you will contact us directly.  We love the Medical University of South Carolina, and we love the Department of Medicine here.  We invite you to explore all that MUSC, the Department, and Charleston have to offer, starting with this site.

We want you to find the right program for your particular needs and desires, and we think that Internal Medicine at MUSC can be that program for you.  As you travel across the region and country, it becomes difficult to distinguish programs.  With that in mind, we would like to share with you the attributes that have led us and many others to pursue training in Charleston.

You can expect excellent training wherever you choose to pursue residency in Internal Medicine, and MUSC certainly provides exactly that.  Patient care is our first priority, and you will have the opportunity to serve individuals with a wide range of conditions, from hypertension and diabetes to scleroderma, sarcoidosis, and fulminant liver failure while working with outstanding generalists and truly world-class specialists.

Perhaps our most important contribution to patient care is the education of residents that will become the next generation of internists.  To that end, we have established systems to ensure that patient care responsibilities do not interfere with your educational activities.  We carefully maintain this balance of service and education as we provide excellent care to our patients.

The people with whom you will work and the city in which you will live should also factor into your decision about residency programs.  MUSC’s Department of Medicine is a friendly group of people that enjoys working with each other, from interns to attendings.  When you visit, this will be evident.  The overall environment in the hospital fosters this, but Charleston also has much to do with the atmosphere of the training program.  Numerous beaches, fabulous restaurants, world-class golf, and unique historical sites await you when you venture into the city and beyond.  Charleston is a great place to live and work.

MUSC distinguishes itself by supplying great training, friendly colleagues, and a wonderful city in which to live.  We hope that you will visit.  We look forward to showing you all that we have to offer.

Sincerely,

Brandon Craft, MD and Clay Shamblin, MD
