NIH Program Project Grants
The Department of Medicine received NIH awards for three Program Project grants:

1. Dr. George Cooper received an award for research on Load Induced Cardiac Hypertrophy in the Adult Mammal
   
2. Dr. Maria Lopes-Virella received an award for research on Markers and Mechanisms of Macrovascular Disease in Diabetes
   
3. Dr. Richard Silver received an award for research on Rheumatic Diseases in African Americans. 

Department of Medicine faculty also served as Directors for two NIH institutional Training Grants:

1. Summer Research Program for Minority Medical Students (NIH T35 HL07923 Donald Menick), and
   
2. Short Term Research Training for Health Professional Students (5T35 DK007431-22 Ayad Jaffa)

Dr. Rita Young received an award from the Hollings Cancer Center for research on Treatment Targets to Prevent Progression of Oral Lesions to Cancer.
