Grant Study Section Policy

The Department of Medicine is establishing a Grant Study Section for the purpose of providing department investigators with the benefit of internal grant reviews by senior investigators.  The goal of the Grant Study Section is to provide objective input, direction, and suggestions for junior faculty who are submitting grant proposals to the NIH, and who have not had prior independent NIH grant funding.  Review of proposals to other agencies is anticipated in the future, however, initial focus will be on NIH R01, R03, R21, and K proposals.

Implementation Plan
The DOM Grant Study Section will accept grants for review beginning in January, 2007.

Gary Gilkeson, M.D.

Investigators who are preparing proposals for February/March deadlines should e-mail their scientific sections to:

Gary Gilkeson, M.D. & Ayad Jaffa, M.D.

The deadline is Wednesday January 3rd for the February deadline and February 1st for the March deadline. Proposals will be assigned to reviewers within 2 days, and the investigator will receive their proposal reviews within two weeks.  Investigators are encouraged to submit grant proposals to the Study Section for the February/March NIH deadlines, however, internal reviews will be required for all future submissions to NIH (effective with the June/July deadline) for DOM faculty without prior independent NIH grant funding.

Internal reviews should be requested 30 days prior to the NIH published deadline.  Exceptions from reviews will be assessed on a case by case basis.  An explanation of the reason for not submitting a proposal for internal review should be sent to Drs. Gilkeson/Jaffa prior to routing a proposal for submission.

Other institutions with internal grant reviews have experienced very positive results with stronger proposals, and with greater success in grant funding.  We express appreciation to the contribution of senior investigators that will serve as grant reviewers.
