The Medical University of South Carolina Orthopaedic Research Laboratory was established in 1991 by Richard J. Friedman, MD, and Yuehuei H. An, MD. The MUSC laboratory has become a multi-functional research and education center in several areas in orthopaedic research, including orthopaedic animal models, bone and cartilage tissue engineering, bone and implant biomechanics, implant designing, internal fixation in osteoporotic bone, bacterial adhesion and implant infection, and therapeutic tumor embolization models.

Our Main Objectives

  • To promote basic and applied orthopaedic research leading to eventual human application 
  • To educate students and orthopaedic residents in orthopaedic research
  • To promote collaborations with other institutions for the development of orthopaedic research
  • To assist the commercial orthopaedic community for the development of better human medical products
