The General Pediatrics Research Group provides the children of the greater Charleston area
with the opportunity to actively participate in world class pediatric research initiatives via Phase
I, II, III, and IV clinical research trials. Quality assurance standards are high and continuously
monitored from initial contract agreement to final data presentation and contract closure. By
working together, we are able to achieve a solid and predictable clinical research initiative. With
these goals in mind, we pledge to make this a positive experience for our clients and to provide
accurate and reliable data to our sponsors. Our group is affiliated with pediatric primary health
care providers from MUSC Children's Hospital's General Pediatrics Department, the Pediatric
Primary Care Clinic, the South Carolina Pediatric Practice Research Network (SCPPRN) and our
Attending/Resident Physician Continuity Clinic. Our clinical patient contacts average seventy
per day (9,000 active patient pool/10,000 well checks per year).

The Division has active research efforts in each of our clinical sections, including Hospital
Medicine, Outpatient and Community Practice, and the Newborn Nursery. Hospitalist faculty
have research foci in asthma care, international health, use of Health Information Technology
to improve quality and efficiency of care, and medication errors. Our hospitalists are active in
medical education research as well. Outpatient faculty are active in clinical trials, health services
research, immunization delivery, environmental health, and practice-based research network
research. Research activity in the Newborn Nursery focuses on process improvement.

All General Pediatric research activities are available to trainees, and Division faculty frequently
serve as mentors to medical students, residents, and fellows completing research or quality
improvement projects.
