Charleston was everything I imagined and more. The educational opportunities at MUSC are abundant with beautiful facilities. I knew I had fallen in love when I saw the three story gym that they cared about the overall well being of there residents and students. Charleston is filled with some of the nicest people I have ever met, this shines through in my interactions with faculty, staff and patients at MUSC. I felt like I was at home right away and I am definitely a better person, both professionally and in my everyday life, since I moved here.

The faculty and residents had so much camaraderie while I was going through my medical school rotations at MUSC that I knew I would enjoy it here. Plus, it would have been very hard for me to leave Charleston since it is surrounded by awesome beaches, waterways, and islands. Boats are always a good time in my opinion.

With so many residency programs out there, I narrowed my search down to programs in a great location, with awesome people, in an academic setting. From the minute I arrived in Charleston and left my sweater in the car (in the balmy sea breezes of January) to the moment I stepped out of the hospital after the interview, I knew MUSC was a place that met and even exceeded all my expectations. The atmosphere is so supportive here; everyone wants everyone else to excel. The program has a good academic reputation, and the people at MUSC are some of the smartest, most hilarious people you'll ever meet. The beach is pretty fantastic too.

When I was looking for a program I primarily looked in the southeast region. MUSC was actually my first interview and I loved it. I compared every program thereafter to MUSC. I think the people made the biggest difference. I felt welcomed by everyone at MUSC. Becky ended my interview with a hug and that sealed the deal. It is definitely a family environment and we all do a pretty good job of supporting each other. For instance, my wife and I recently had a baby that was born 3 months early and had to be in the NICU at MUSC for a few months. The residents, faculty, and staff did an awesome job of taking care of me, my wife, and our new daughter. They organized a dinner train where people brought us dinner almost every day for 6 weeks. So that was one less thing to worry about while stressing over the well-being of my daughter. The list goes on and on about why I know I made the right decision to come to MUSC.

On the way home from my interview at MUSC, I knew I had found my new home. In a residency, I was looking for a place where I could not only thrive academically, but where I would actually be happy as a resident. At MUSC, as cliche as it sounds, they care about you as a person and your growth as a physician. The residents are welcoming and always willing to lend a helping hand, the attendings know you by name, and the program directors and coordinators are outstanding. MUSC, as a huge referral center for the South, sees a great variety of both common and very complex medical problems. I also love that there is an independent Children's Hospital, tons of ancillary services and support, and a program dedicated to constant growth and improvement. And my wife tells me its not too hard living at the beach!

Coming from Chicago, I was looking for a strong Med-Peds program in a smaller city with beautiful weather.  After interviewing at MUSC, I was really impressed with both departments.  The residents seemed very knowledgeable and truly happy.  The smaller Med-Peds class allows you to really get to know the categorical Medicine and Pediatric residents.  I really feel like I am a part of both groups.  However, there is definitely still a Med-Peds presence throughout the hospital.  In looking back, I’m extremely happy to be at MUSC.  Plus, Charleston is absolutely beautiful!  I have everything I want from a larger city including amazing restaurants, nightlife, and super fun beaches. Best of all, things are a lot cheaper and less crowded!
