Breast Imaging Research

Breast Imaging Research at MUSC is centered on the clinical effectiveness of breast imaging devices.  Research interests of our investigators involve all types of imaging devices used in the detection of breast cancer, surgical planning, and monitoring of breast cancer treatment.

Imaging devices currently under investigation include: mammography systems, ultrasound systems, and magnetic resonance imaging systems.  Our research efforts are typically multidisciplinary in nature involving not only our breast imaging radiologists but also surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, engineers, physicists, statisticians both on MUSC campus and beyond.

We are actively involved in industry-sponsored studies, cooperative group studies, and investigator-initiated clinical trials and lab based experiments aimed at assessing improvements to existing breast imaging systems as well as methods and protocols that lead to more effective clinical use of existing breast imaging systems.

We are in the process of expanding our research and development activities of new breast imaging technologies at MUSC through the addition of dedicated research imaging rooms to our mammography clinic in Hollings Cancer Center.
