Neuroradiology
The division of neuroradiology at MUSC provides clinical, educational, and research services in all aspects of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology for the patients in Charleston and throughout South Carolina. The most advanced and sophisticated MR, CT, DSA and PET-CT imaging studies are being performed on a regular basis using state-of-the art equipment. The Division actively collaborates in clinical, educational and research activities with multiple departments throughout MUSC, primarily Neurosciences, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics and Pathology.
Clinical activity in the Division has dramatically increased over the past four years – there have been over 30,000 MR imaging and CT exams performed during 2007-08 academic year, an increase of over 11% compared to the previous year. This has also led to recruitment of clinical faculty, which is now comprised of 7 neuroradiologists. Over 160 intracranial aneurysms have been successfully treated by endovascular embolization; vascular malformations and tumors of brain, head, neck and spine are also being treated by endovascular methods. CT-guided biopsies of the head, neck and spine, as well as invasive spinal procedures are performed on a daily basis. New and advanced studies such as MR perfusion, tractography, spectroscopy and functional brain MR imaging, CT perfusion and angiography have been fully implemented in clinical practice. Patients are examined on state of the art equipment, including dual source CT, 3 Tesla MR scanner, biplane DSA, and PET-CT scanner. The Division actively participates in multiple interdepartmental conferences, where entire teams discuss and decide on further management of individual patients: head and neck tumor board, brain and spine tumor board, pediatric tumor board, refractory epilepsy conference, neurovascular conference, fetal board. The Division has also successfully initiated an ACGME accredited fellowship program in diagnostic neuroradiology with the first fellow starting in 2007-08 academic year. The faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally and have been invited as speakers and visiting professors to national and international meetings and other academic institutions. |
