Professor of Radiology
Scientific Director, Center for Biomedical Imaging and
Stephen Schabel Endowed Chair in Radiology

Truman R. Brown, Ph.D. is a Professor of Radiology and the Scientific Director of the Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Stephen Schabel Endowed Chair in Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Brown received his B.S. and PhD degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Physics followed by a distinguished research career at Bell Laboratories until 1983.  From 1983 until 2001 he was a senior member of the Division of Medical Science and Chairman of NMR and medical spectroscopy at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.  In 2001 he moved to Columbia University as a Professor of Radiology and the Percy Kay and Vida L.W. Hudson Professor of Biomedical Engineering where he worked until he was recruited by MUSC in 2010.

Dr. Brown is best known for his original contributions in magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (chemical shift imaging).  This new method allowed development of the field of in vivo MR spectroscopy essential to numerous research and clinical applications in current practice.  He obtained a U.S. patent for this method which was placed in the public domain by Bell Laboratories.

Dr. Brown is currently the Principal Investigator of a multi-institutional clincal trial in the management of cancer.  Other key discoveries by Dr. Brown and his colleagues include demonstration of the potential role of fructose 3-phosphate in diabetic blindness.  More recently Dr. Brown has received funding to use functional MRI brain imaging to investigate cognition, learning and memory in the aging population.

Dr. Brown holds a total of 10 patents and patent applications.  He is a member of the Editorial Board of NMR in Biomedicine and was the North American Editor of NMR in Biomedicine for 8 years.  Dr. Brown was a member and chairman of the Diagnostic Radiology Study Section of the NIH from 1990 to 1995 and has served as a reviewer for the NIH many times since then.  He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
