Maria de Fatima Falangola, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Falangola graduated from Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. She completed an Anatomic Pathology residency at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. She was then a research fellow in Neuropathology at The New York Hospital, Cornell University Medical College in New York and at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami. She completed her Ph.D. at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute-Fiocruz, Brazil on the topic of brain HIV infection. Her research career in brain neuroimaging developed at the Nathan Kline Institute and at the New York University where she was a Research Scientist and Assistant Professor, respectively. She joined the Radiology faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina in August 2010.
Her research aims to understand the morphological and bio-physiological basis behind MR quantitative measures (relaxation and diffusion measures), to determine its clinical relevance, and to establish an approach to correlate MRI quantitative parameters and histological parameters, applying this approach to study different Central Nervous System diseases.
