He completed his internship and residency in radiology at the Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, New York. He then completed a two-year research fellowship in renal physiology and imaging at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. At that time he was awarded a USPHS National Research Service Award Grant. Dr. Katzberg returned to the University of Rochester as the "James P. Wilmot Distinguished Assistant Professor," became Associate Professor in 1984, Director of Radiological Research in 1986, and Director of the Department of Radiology Magnetic Resonance Clinical Imaging Center in 1987. His career led him to the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon where he accepted a position as Professor and Chair of Radiology. Dr. Katzberg served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology at UCDMC from 1991 to 1996.
The research interests of Richard W. Katzberg, M.D. are genitourinary radiology, contrast media, and the pathophysiology of diseases of the temporomandibular joint. Recent and on-going projects focus on radiographic contrast media-induced acute renal failure, severe and fatal reactions to radiographic contrast media, MRI of TMJ internal derangements, physiology of obstructive uropathy, electromagnetic induction generated by the motion of conductive fluid exposed to an extracorporeal MR system, and MR functional imaging of the kidney. Dr. Katzberg's awards and honors include Alpha Omega Alpha, Association of University Radiologists Residents Award for Research (1977), Editor's Award for "special distinction" in reviewing for Radiology (1986, 1987), the Stauffer Award for the Best Laboratory Research Article Published in Investigative Radiology (1986 and 2001), the "John Caffey Award" (Silver Medal) for Pediatric Radiology, and for having published one of the twelve most influential articles in the 25 years Investigative Radiology has been printed.
