Dr. Thomas Pope received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia for residency.  Certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1983, Dr. Pope’s initial appointment was as an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Virginia.  He served in this capacity for six years including a brief stint in private practice back in Chapel Hill.  He joined the faculty at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC as an Associate Professor in July 1989.  In 1997 Dr. Pope joined the Roper Radiology group in Charleston, SC and moved to the Medical University of South Carolina in January 1999 as Professor of Radiology.  Presently he serves as Director of Breast Imaging and his primary academic interests are Breast Imaging and Musculoskeletal Imaging. 

Dr. Pope was awarded the Robley Dunglison Award as the most outstanding medical student teacher at the University of Virginia twice (1986, 1987).  He served in 1994 as an endowed professor, the Boerhaave Professor of Radiology, at Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands.  In 1997, Dr. Pope was selected as the American Roentgen Ray Visiting Professor to the Armed Forces Institute in Washington, DC and also returned to serve as the Visiting Scientist at the same institution in 2004.  Most recently, Dr. Pope served as the RSNA Visiting Professor to Chile in October 2006.

Dr. Pope has served as a guest examiner for the American Board of Radiology 11 times and has examined in Breast, Chest and Musculoskeletal imaging.  Dr. Pope has been invited as a Visiting Professor in excess of 50 times, has co-edited 11 books, and has collaborated on 35 chapters and over 150 articles.
