Department of radiology and Radiological Science

J. Bayne Selby, M.D.

Professor of Radiology
Director of Interventional Radiology

Dr. Selby studied nuclear engineering at Georgia Tech and received his Masters in Nuclear Engineering (Health Physics) in 1975. He then worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a Health Physicist until 1979 when he began medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Selby decided to concentrate on Vascular/Interventional Radiology (VIR), and has worked in that field ever since. He won the President's Award from the American Roentgen Ray Society for best original paper by a resident, an honor which  lead  him into academics.

Dr. Selby was a member of the faculty at the University of Virginia during one of the most exciting times in the history of VIR. During that time Dr. Selby performed renal, iliac, and SFA angioplasties every day, participated in the initial trials for biliary wallstents, went from 30 french IVC filter introducers to simon nitinol filters, and began performing TIPS.  Also during this period he published a paper on using fluoroscopic techniques to aid in central line placement, one of the earliest harbingers of the future of venous access.

In the early 1990's VIR seemed ready to play a bigger role outside of academics, namely in private practice.  Dr.  Selby  joined a forward thinking private practice group in Washington state and where a dedicated VIR section was developed, with a dramatic increase in the number and variety of procedures performed.  During this period Dr. Selby put together a special session for the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR) annual meeting on different ways to develop a VIR practice, with speakers covering all the emerging models for a successful VIR practice.  He also became intimately involved with the development and evolution of the SCVIR electronic database (HI-IQ), and was Chairman of this project for about five years.

At this time Dr. Selby became aware of tremendous improvements at his alma mater, MUSC, at the university, departmental, and divisional levels. Renan Uflacker had begun the transition of taking VIR at MUSC from a highly respected but small operation to a modern aggressive practice. It was an exciting time to return and subsequent work yielded a 300% increase in procedures over the ensuing six years.

Dr. Selby is Board Certified in Radiology with Certificate of Added Qualifications in Vascular/Interventional Radiology.  Most recently, Dr. Selby has worked on developing a renewed emphasis on cardiac imaging beginning with calcium scoring in 1999 to our current ongoing work with our new 64 slice CT scanner.
